SUSTAINABLE IMPACT
WHERE WE WORK
PARTNERS

HONDURAS

In 2004, we began our work in Honduras as a medical relief organization. Through collaboration with community partners and local leaders, we began to understand the underlying issues causing health challenges and decided that rather than focusing on short-term medical relief we would work to empower communities through our Holistic Model of economic development, sustainable healthcare and WASH projects. As our first partner country, Honduras has helped mold Kambia into the organization that we are today. Many of our deepest relationships are in Honduras still, and we love inviting new groups to experience the beauty and culture of this mountainous country.

Community Partners and Projects

Kambia, alongside our parent organization Global Brigades, works in 326 communities that include 266,000 community members across the country of Honduras. Over the 20 years we have spent in service to Honduras, our work has spanned the departments (regions) of Francisco Morazán, El Paraíso, La Paz, Comayagua and Olancho.

While the people vary from region to region and community to community, Hondurans are overall kind, welcoming and resilient people. In the rural communities in which we focus our work, most families are farming staple crops including corn, beans, plantain and other vegetables. Some mountain areas are famous for coffee, and you are likely to be invited in for a drink.

Accommodations, Logistics, and Food

Our professional and experienced staff will meet you at the Comayagua International Airport, also known as the Palmerola International Airport (XPL) upon arrival and take you directly to our “home-base” accommodations about 2 hours outside of the major city center. At our accommodations, you will enjoy authentic local cuisine and our staff will orient you to the country and the work you will be doing.

The accommodations are comfortable, quiet, peaceful and private. Kambia provides 24-hour security as well as on-site staff to take care of any needs. We will do everything that we can to make you feel at home, safe and comfortable.

During your visits to the community, our professional drivers will transport you safely and our coordinators will ensure that you have everything that you need.|

Our Staff

Kambia’s team of local staff including medical professionals, paramedics, drivers, cooks and lodging managers are present throughout each program and ensure that you are always supported and cared for. With more than 20 years of experience, our team will welcome you to Honduras and introduce you to our amazing community partners. In addition to excellent service staff, we employ a full-time team of professional health and economic development professionals that make sure the work that you do is impactful and sustainable. We look forward to meeting you in Honduras!

Cultural Learning

In addition to the high-impact development projects that you and your team will undertake, we also want to make sure that you are introduced to Honduran culture through authentic and traditional cultural activities. Examples include Spanish lessons, a leather-making class, traditional candy-making workshop, a coffee tour and barista experience and mural painting instruction. Also in the evenings you will enjoy reflection sessions and guest speakers who will illuminate on Honduran history and local traditions.

Enrichment Activities

(OPTIONAL ADD-ON PACKAGES)

After a full week of service work, your group may want to undertake an adventure to explore deeper into the jungle, visit some of the region’s famous Mayan ruins or relax at the beach. Kambia is happy to help organize these (optional) activities for you and your group. One of the highlights includes a visit to Copan, a famous Mayan ruin in northern Honduras.

The site functioned as the political, civil and religious center of the Copan Valley. It is declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a guided tour is a fascinating introduction to Mayan culture and history.

Make sure to organize any enrichment activities with the Kambia team when customizing your trip. We look forward to welcoming you to Honduras!
